For referrers
Referrals to Andy Thompson
GPs, physiotherapists and other health professionals can refer patients for primary (first-time) hip and knee replacement, revision surgery, general hip and knee problems and knee sports injuries, including meniscal tears, patellar dislocation and ACL injuries.
A clinician referral is required for appointments funded by ACC or private health insurance. Email is the preferred way to send referral letters, clinical information and supporting documents. Use “Show referral email” below to view the address.
HealthLink EDI: ORTHODOX
Referrals can also be sent through Specialist Referrals (SR) from a supported practice management system (PMS).

ACC hip and knee referrals
The clinic can help arrange appointments for ACC-covered hip and knee injuries. There is no surcharge for consultations funded by ACC. Please include the claim number, date of injury and any relevant ACC correspondence if available. Funding for assessment or treatment remains subject to the covered injury and ACC requirements.
Andy is a Careway provider. For a Careway referral, please indicate this on the referral and include the ACC claim details. Eligibility and treatment approval depend on the programme’s criteria.
Referral checklist
A brief referral outlining the reason for review, previous treatment and funding details is helpful.
- Reason for referral and main symptoms.
- Relevant examination findings and duration of symptoms.
- Current medications, allergies and relevant medical background.
- Imaging reports or where imaging was performed.
- ACC claim details, insurer information or self-funded status if known.
- For revision cases, previous operation notes, implant details and prior imaging are especially helpful.
After the referral
The clinic team reviews each referral and may ask for more information before arranging an appointment. A referral does not mean surgery is needed.
Andy can arrange relevant imaging following referral. Where helpful, this may be completed before the consultation, and a radiology provider may contact the patient directly to arrange it.
Patients with urgent new or worsening symptoms should be directed to their GP, urgent care or nearest emergency department, or 111 in an emergency.
After the appointment
Andy may recommend treatment without surgery, including injections, further imaging, rehabilitation or monitoring. Surgery may be considered where clinically appropriate.
Robotic-assisted knee replacement may also be an option for suitable patients.
