Knee replacement

VELYS robotic-assisted knee replacement in Wellington

Robotic assistance is one of the tools Andy can use when planning and performing a primary total knee replacement.

What is VELYS?

VELYS is a robotic-assisted surgical system that supports the surgeon during primary total knee replacement. Andy performs the operation and makes the surgical decisions. The system helps him put the surgical plan into practice.

During surgery, measurements of your knee help Andy plan the position and size of the implants and assess the balance of the surrounding soft tissues. Trackers attached to the bones allow the system to follow the knee’s position. The robotic equipment then assists with the planned bone preparation under Andy’s control.

VELYS and the ATTUNE knee implant

These are different parts of the operation. VELYS provides robotic assistance; ATTUNE is the knee implant system that replaces the damaged joint surfaces. The robot does not stay in your knee.

Read the manufacturer’s information about VELYS and the ATTUNE knee system.

Is it suitable for me?

The first question is whether a knee replacement is appropriate. Andy will consider your arthritis, symptoms, previous treatment, general health and what you hope to get back to doing. Exercises, medication, changes to activities or other treatment without surgery may still be appropriate.

If replacement is a reasonable option, you can discuss whether robotic assistance would be useful in your case. This page describes primary total knee replacement. For another operation after an existing replacement, see revision knee replacement.

See knee replacement for more about the operation and its alternatives.

Will I need a CT scan?

A CT scan is not routinely needed specifically to plan a VELYS knee replacement: the system uses measurements collected during the operation. Knee X-rays remain part of the assessment, and Andy may request other imaging when there is a clinical reason.

What can robotic assistance add?

The system gives Andy information about knee alignment and balance during the operation and supports him in carrying out the planned bone cuts. He can assess the measurements as he works and adjust the surgical plan where needed.

More information and controlled bone preparation do not guarantee a better result for an individual patient. Robotic assistance cannot promise less pain, faster recovery, better function or a longer-lasting implant. Your health, the condition of your knee, the operation itself and rehabilitation all matter.

Published clinical research on VELYS includes studies of alignment accuracy and early outcomes. Those findings should not be read as a guarantee of an individual outcome.

Risks and limitations

Robotic-assisted knee replacement still carries the risks of knee replacement, including infection, blood clots, bleeding, stiffness, ongoing pain, injury to nerves or blood vessels, and implant problems that may require further surgery.

Tracking pins are fixed temporarily to the bones. Additional considerations include problems at the pin sites, such as infection or fracture. Equipment or tracking difficulties may mean completing the operation with conventional instruments. Andy will discuss the relevant risks and alternatives with you before surgery.

Recovery and rehabilitation

Robotic assistance does not remove the need for rehabilitation. Your hospital team will help with pain relief, getting up and walking, and exercises for movement and strength. You may need walking aids while confidence and strength improve.

Continue the exercises and follow-up plan agreed with your team. Returning to work, driving, exercise and everyday activities depends on your progress, the demands of the activity and your individual advice. The knee replacement handout and after-surgery information explain the general pathway.

The NHS guide to knee replacement recovery provides further general information. Follow the individual advice from your own surgical team.

Consultations and surgery in Wellington

From January 2027, consultations will take place within Wellington Orthopaedic & Sports Surgeons (WOSS), Level G, Bowen Specialist Centre, 98 Churchill Drive, Crofton Downs, Wellington 6035.

The consulting rooms are separate from the hospital admission for surgery. Andy offers VELYS-assisted primary total knee replacement at Bowen Hospital and Wakefield Hospital. If surgery is agreed, the clinic will confirm the hospital and the arrangements for your operation.

ACC or insurance eligibility, approval and any additional costs need to be checked for your own circumstances. Every insurance policy is different. See fees and funding, and ask the clinic about suitability and funding before making arrangements.

Common questions

Does the robot perform the operation?

No. Andy performs the operation and makes the decisions; VELYS assists with planning and bone preparation.

Do I need a CT scan?

Not routinely for VELYS planning. You will still need appropriate knee assessment and X-rays, with other imaging if needed.

Is robotic-assisted knee replacement suitable for everyone?

No. Andy will first assess whether knee replacement is appropriate, then discuss the surgical options with you.

Does it guarantee a better result?

No. The technology supports the operation but cannot guarantee pain relief, function, recovery time or implant longevity.

What does rehabilitation involve?

A plan for walking, exercises, pain relief and follow-up, adapted to your progress and individual needs.

How do I enquire about suitability and funding?

Email the clinic, use the appointment enquiry form or phone 04 242 0909. Clinicians can send a referral.
