Hip care
Revision hip replacement
Revision hip replacement is further surgery to replace or revise part or all of an existing hip replacement. Pain or concern after a previous hip replacement can have many causes. Andy will review your symptoms and any available records of your previous surgery, implant information and scans.
Considering revision surgery
- Further tests may be needed before a clear treatment plan can be made.
- Previous operation notes and implant details are helpful.
- Revision surgery is complex and is not always required.
Reasons to seek advice
Pain after replacement
Pain may come from the hip, surrounding soft tissues or other causes.
Change in function
New instability, limp, reduced walking tolerance or change in confidence may need review.
Implant concerns
Wear, loosening, infection or other implant-related issues may need investigation.
At your appointment
Andy will ask about the original surgery, current symptoms, medical history and previous investigations.
Further X-rays, blood tests, CT, MRI or other investigations may be needed to clarify the cause of your symptoms.
Before your appointment
If available, bring previous operation notes, implant details or stickers, letters, recent images or reports and investigation results.
Your treatment options
Not every painful hip replacement requires revision surgery. Treatment may involve further investigation, non-operative management or review of other possible sources of pain.
Talking about surgery
Revision hip surgery may be discussed when the cause of symptoms is reasonably clear and surgery is likely to be an appropriate option. The discussion includes complexity, risks, recovery, alternatives and the limits of what surgery can achieve.
Planning your care
Next steps may include gathering previous records, arranging investigations and confirming funding. Assessment can take time while this information is collected.
Funding approval and timing depend on the funder, records and investigation results.
