Appointments with Andy Thompson

Consulting location from January 2027: Bowen Specialist Centre, 98 Churchill Drive, Crofton Downs, Wellington.

Andy’s Wellington practice will include primary (first-time) and revision hip and knee replacement, general hip and knee problems, and knee sports injuries. The clinic can help arrange appointments for ACC-covered hip and knee injuries.

For appointments funded by ACC or private health insurance, you’ll need a referral from your GP, physiotherapist or another clinician. If you’re funding the appointment yourself, without ACC or insurance funding, please contact the clinic to discuss whether a self-referral is suitable.

For clinical referrals and documents, see referral routes and protected email. For appointment enquiries, use the enquiry form or phone 04 242 0909.

Preparing for your appointment

  • Bring a list of medications and allergies.
  • Bring relevant letters and imaging reports, or tell the clinic where and when your scans were performed.
  • If applicable, have your ACC claim number, date of injury and relevant ACC correspondence, or your insurance details, available.
  • For a previous joint replacement, bring any operation notes or implant information you have.
  • You are welcome to bring a support person. Please tell the clinic about any access or support needs when enquiring.

Imaging before your visit

After reviewing your referral, Andy may arrange relevant X-rays or scans before your appointment. The radiology provider may contact you directly to book these. Having imaging ready can help make the most of your consultation and reduce extra visits.

Patient information guides

The guides provide general information and can help you prepare questions for your consultation. Andy will explain the options for your condition and discuss any surgery and recovery plan in the context of your health and goals.

After your appointment

Andy may recommend treatment without surgery, further tests, injections, rehabilitation, monitoring or surgery where clinically appropriate. His advice takes account of your symptoms, examination findings, scans, general health and what you hope to achieve.

Preparing for surgery

If your surgery has been booked or is being arranged, use the information for the hospital named in your booking. Follow the instructions from your surgeon, anaesthetist and hospital. If the hospital has not yet been confirmed, contact the clinic before completing forms.

Hospital links open in a new tab.

After your surgery

Follow the discharge instructions given to you by Andy and your hospital team. Advice about your wound, medicines, activity and rehabilitation will depend on your operation and individual recovery.

Follow-up appointments

The clinic will book your postoperative follow-up appointments. If you need to change an appointment or check the details, please call 04 242 0909.

Wound concerns

Call the clinic promptly if you notice increasing redness, warmth, swelling or pain around your wound, new or persistent leakage, unpleasant discharge, the wound opening, a fever or feeling unwell.

Do not wait for your next booked appointment.

If you cannot reach the surgical team, use the contact instructions from your hospital or seek prompt assessment from your GP or an urgent care service. Go to an emergency department if symptoms are severe or worsening. For urgent concerns, call rather than email.

Urgent help: New calf pain or swelling needs urgent medical assessment. Call 111 for an ambulance if you have chest pain, sudden difficulty breathing, collapse or severe bleeding that will not stop.
